Canon: Persona 5
Canon Point: Before Rank 6
Age: No canon age has been provided; however, Yusuke Kitagawa referred to her as a classmate once, so I'm going to take that literally and put her at 16-17 years old!
History: Her full social link can be found here. Here's her Wiki with a really good summary of her history! It doesn't touch upon every detail however, so I'm going to elaborate on some of the things that aren't mentioned on the Wiki:
So that's her backstory! Here's more info on what happens during her social link:
Personality: When Protag first meets Hifumi in Kanda, she presents herself as a polite, soft-spoken young woman who simply wishes to try out new shogi tactics. She seems wary when Protag asks to learn from her, turning him down politely; it's only after he plays a match with her when she starts to open up, and shows a side of herself that one wouldn't assume she had at a first glance.
When it comes to shogi matches, Hifumi is aggressive, critical, and relentless. She backs Protag into a corner during their first match, and when he refuses to concede, she criticizes him, stating that conceding is an act of grace and harshly advises him to start taking his study of shogi to heart. Hifumi takes shogi incredibly seriously and abides by a strict honor code when it comes to her opponents. She views the board and its pieces as her kingdom and projects this while she plays--people generally find it odd and she often gets made fun of for it, and although Hifumi considers this a bad habit of hers, it helps her get into a competitive mindset. She also believes in thinking positive thoughts before her matches, and always prepares herself to do the very best she can, even if it's just for practice. It's a complete 180 from what'd you'd expect of a quiet girl like her, really.
Hifumi tells Protag that she normally isn't very talkative, but once you gain her trust, she's more than willing to open up. She still maintains some level of formality when she speaks, graceful and refined in her mannerisms; but she's much more honest. This is shown in her social link. Once Hifumi begins to trust Protag, she starts talking about her troubles with her family and her rise to fame, confiding in him while she goes through a difficult period in her life.
A lot of her problems seem to stem from her disliking all of the attention that comes with being famous, mostly because of how people see her as an idol instead of a shogi player. She's clearly uncomfortable when a male fan approaches her during her Confidant, she doesn't seem pleased at all when one of her seniors is rude to her, and she isn't enthusiastic about doing tons of interviews and photoshoots. I believe Hifumi would rather live a quiet life where she can play shogi to her heart's content, go up against opponents without worrying about public scrutiny, and be able to earn the community's respect through her gameplay. She does, however, use her fame to her advantage during an interview about the Protag's imprisonment. The interview serves as a platform to fight for his release, giving him her full support in hopes that she'll be the one to help him out this time around. So while she certainly can be adverse to being in the spotlight, she's also willing to use her platform as a celebrity (?) to do what she can to help people in need, especially those she cares about.
When it comes to her friends and family, Hifumi is selfless and loyal--sometimes to a fault. In the beginning of her Confidant, she talked about the life that Mitsuyo wants for her: Interviews, photoshoots, a strict no-dating policy, and that her victories were contributions for her family. While Hifumi didn't like this, she stuck to her mother's plan for the sake of helping her family and pleasing Mitsuyo. After the article about her family is released in the magazine, Hifumi starts considering quitting shogi so her family won't get hurt again. Furthermore, after her defeat in the exhibition match, she feels like she needs to cut ties with Protag because she thinks she's done nothing but bring him pain. While he can definitely change her mind, it takes a little bit of convincing because of how guilty and upset she is over everything that's happened to her. If you decide to start a romance with her, she tells Protag that "[she] will become a woman who's worthy of [him]". All of this shows that Hifumi often thinks of others when it comes to making decisions.
Though that's not to say that she doesn't think of herself, too; Hifumi's Confidant is all about her sticking with her passion and staying true to her own goals and desires, after all. Even though there are times when she doubts herself and her decision to continue on with shogi, she always finds a way to stick to it and follow her passion despite what other people want from her. She could have easily quit when she decided to come clean about her mother's actions; instead, she chooses to keep going in a forthright pursuit of becoming a talented shogi player.
This is a testament to how Hifumi is able to make the best out of unwanted situations. Protag's support certainly helped a lot, but it is ultimately Hifumi who finds the strength she needs to pursue her shogi career despite, well, everything. She carries on with the exhibition match even after being dubbed the Phony Princess by the media because she wants to show an sincere display of skill. And even after facing a humiliating loss, she finds a sense of relief in knowing that she played an honest match. That she even continues her career for so long shows that Hifumi always finds a reason to keep on going, even if sometimes she needs a little help finding it. If there's anything to commend her for, it's that she doesn't give up easily, and moves forward even when faced with adversity.
Abilities: Aside from being a dedicated shogi player, Hifumi is a great tactician. It's implied that Protag was able to use what he learned from her outside of their shogi matches, and translated those lessons to his work in the Metaverse. Therefore, I believe that Hifumi is able to come up with viable strategies for various situations, based on what she's learned from shogi.
In regards to her shogi skills, it's hard to really gauge just how good she is due to how her matches were fixed by her mother, on top of losing to a pro player. I like to think that she's at least somewhat talented from the canon point I'm taking her from; not quite good enough to be a professional, but better than the average player. She's certainly improving, though!

God/Shinki: God
Why?: I think it'd be interesting for Hifumi to be able to take charge and learn some leadership skills. I also think it'd be a good way for her to regain her confidence!
Top 3 Choices: Minerva, Kuebiko, Kangiten
God Type: I think Hifumi would definitely be biased towards school-related requests, but I don't think there are any types of requests she'd turn away in particular. She'd definitely try to be the sort of god her previous incarnation was, but eventually forge her own path based off of her incarnation's ideals.
Power: Telekinesis. Hifumi will be able to manipulate objects up to 50 lbs. with her mind. With tons of training, she'll be able to manipulate objects up to 100 lbs. But as it stands, her lack of combat experience means that it'll be a while before she can get to that point. She can also only control a maximum of two objects at once for up to 20 seconds at a time before she needs to recharge.

History: Her full social link can be found here. Here's her Wiki with a really good summary of her history! It doesn't touch upon every detail however, so I'm going to elaborate on some of the things that aren't mentioned on the Wiki:
- Hifumi's father is the man who inspired her to play shogi. She says she really admires him because of how he doesn't hesitate when he makes a move--just like a true king. He's the one who introduced her to the game; part of his training was to have Hifumi perform image training exercises when she was younger to help her learn the rules, which is how she developed her habit of roleplaying while playing shogi.
- One day, her father collapsed and fell ill. Her mother, Mitsuyo, began to project her desires onto Hifumi, wanting her to gain the fame and fortune that she herself could not, essentially living vicariously through her daughter. She threw Hifumi into a life of fame by setting up countless interviews and photoshoots for her, which made Hifumi feel like she was being treated more like an idol than being recognized for her talents. However, Hifumi also agreed to all of this because she felt that it was her duty to help bring in income for her family since her father was out of commission.
- Hifumi gained a lot of male fans at this point and got approached by them frequently, causing Mitsuyo to ban her from dating. Many of her seniors started hating her because of her popularity. (Hifumi tells this to the Protagonist during her social link: "The more attention I get, the more enemies I make, and the more lies are spread about me...")
- She started playing shogi at a church in Kanda. Hifumi refers to the priest in her social link as her "shogi friend", and enjoys playing at the church because he doesn't laugh at her "embarrassing habit" of roleplaying during a shogi match. However, it's later revealed that the real reason why she plays shogi at the church is because nobody else other than her bedridden father wants to play with her.
So that's her backstory! Here's more info on what happens during her social link:
- The Protagonist visits the church and encounters Hifumi for the first time. He asks her to train him so (without her knowledge) he can learn more tactics for the Phantom Thieves. Hifumi is hesitant at first but agrees to teach him after they play a match together, intrigued by his "gambler spirit". She makes a deal with him: She will instruct him if he agrees to help her test out new moves. The Protagonist accepts, and a social link is established.
- Before unlocking Rank 6, an article from a weekly magazine is posted that provides inside details on Hifumi's family. It talks about how her father is sick and bedridden and Mitsuyo is the family's main source of income, even disclosing that her mother works at a night club. Mitsuyo believes that Hifumi would be able to quell the rumors if she became famous; as a result Mitsuyo starts pushing more and more interviews onto Hifumi, much to her chagrin. Even so, she refuses to give up on shogi because she loves it so much, and thanks the Protagonist for helping her push forward despite all of the unfortunate events happening in her life.
- Hifumi talks about an upcoming exhibition match against a professional shogi player. Her mother came up with a "strategy" for her: Hifumi should lose against the pro player so as to garner sympathy from women and develop a female fanbase; then, she should make a comeback and "become a symbol for strong women everywhere." She also reveals in this conversation that Mitsuyo told her she doesn't need to put in so much effort into shogi, and that she can make money solely based on her appearance. Hifumi is clearly upset by this and desires to be recognized for her talents rather than her looks; the Protagonist takes this into consideration and decides to change her mother's heart.
- The Phantom Thieves do their thing, and Mitsuyo confesses to the rigged matches and that she sold the story to the weekly magazine. Hifumi resolves to admit everything, and she wants her match against the pro player to be honest and show her true talents.
- After her confession, the media calls Hifumi a "Phony Princess". She loses her match against the professional player by conceding. Despite losing the match, she's glad that she got to play honestly and says she feels at peace with the loss. However, she tells the Protagonist that this should be their last session; she feels that she has brought the Protagonist pain, and bids him farewell.
- However, the Protagonist is able to convince her that he wants to stay by her side. He can choose to do it as either her friend or her lover--for LifeAftr, I'm going to stick with the friendship route!
- Rank 10 reveals that Hifumi figured out that the Protagonist is one of the Phantom Thieves. This is the canon point I am taking her from. However, there are also a few more scenes with her towards the end of the game: She's shown cheering the Phantom Thieves on during their final battle, fighting for Protag's release from prison in an interview, and bidding him farewell before he goes back home. She also says in her last in-game conversation that she's starting to win matches, presumably fair and square! Good on you, Hifumi.
